Note: citations do not have their own rules for quotation marks and italics, rather standard rules are applied to citations. The lists below are the ones used in Mrs. Whisenhunt's language arts classes in eighth grade and should be familiar to most students.

Punctuation with Quotation Marks and Italics

Below are items that should be enclosed in quotation marks:

  • A person's exact words

  • Titles of short stories

  • Titles of articles

  • Chapter titles

  • Titles of episodes in a television series

  • Titles of poems

  • Song titles (note: the name of the album the songs are in would be italicized)

  • Puns!

  • Students, you may use the grammar book in the Language Arts room to refresh your understanding of the punctuation rules.

Below are items that should be written in italics:

  • Titles of books

  • Titles of plays

  • Titles of movies

  • Titles of operas and other long musical compositions

  • Titles of works of art

  • Titles of long poems, such as epic poetry (The Iliad, The Odyssey)

  • Ship names

  • Words you are emphasizing or stressing in conversation

  • Titles of newspapers, magazines, journals, and other periodicals

  • Names of television series

The above lists are not exhaustive. When something does not fit exactly, determine the list to which it is most similar or consider it may not merritt special treatment.
